In the afternoon, the Venerable had a Dharma talk at Phat Quoc pagoda. He shared that according to Buddhism belief, man is both the owner and beneficiary of his acts in the past, present and future. By carrying out good/bad deeds, man can accordingly reward/punish himself with good/bad life, heaven or hell. All what we get in life are not the Acts of God; as per Buddha’s statement:

By oneself indeed is evil done and by oneself is one defiled;
by oneself is evil not done and by oneself is one purified.
Purity and impurity depend entirely on oneself;
no one can purify another

Dharmapada - Verse 165

From that point of view, whatever situations we are enjoying in life as status, wealth, IQ (intelligence quotient)... are more likely the results of our deeds in the past than the wind-fall events. With such mindset, we would have self- confidence to transform the internal ignorance to enlightenment, open the door of wisdom to attain the deliverance, shun the sufferings and discover the inner Buddha-nature.

In the evening, the Venerable Thich Chan Tinh had a talk at Van Hoa pagoda in Seattle, Washington, US. During the session, he had a briefing about Buddha's life and relevant derived lessons for Buddhists to follow as the Four Noble Truths, impermanence, selflessness, karma and the cause-effect rule. Besides, the Venerable reminded Buddhists performing the right-view in practice, promoting good behavior, fulfilling the duty of lay Buddhists. Lay Buddhist should not be so eager skipping his/her current duties and situation to wholeheartedly perform religious activities as the clergy do. Everyone should try his/her best to cultivate Buddha’s teaching to get happiness to everyone in this life and the after-lives, live in the light of true Dharma and avoid the three troubled states of being.
