Ullumbana Ceremony at Hoang Phap Monastery - Cambodia
July means that Ullumbana season is coming along with full moon - ZhongYuan festival, which is the traditional one of our citizens. Truthful mindedness of honor towards the Great Mother and Father is one of the most honorable features of culture preserved through several generations. Furthermore, it is also a lesson for young generation concerning piety to parents and gratitude to the country.
This was the second time Ullumbana Ceremony held in this pagoda, with the whole heart to Buddha, all of the monks and Buddhists tried to finished making preparations the day before in order that the ceremony was certain to be conducted the arranged day (on July 17th).
On July 17th, the ceremony was expectedly conducted with the witness of the Venerables and the monks from both Vietnam and Cambodia.
At 9 o’clock, all of the bodhimandala recited the name of Buddha to welcome the Venerables and the Monks witnessing the ceremony. At the commencement of the ceremony, Abbot Thich Tam Truc, chief organizer, started the speech for opening ceremony. Then, teenage Buddhists on behalf of all participants offered the six articles for worship to Buddhas of the ten directions and the Venerables presenting to create auspicious conditions on the occasion.
With the sweet tunes of Mother’s heart song, Buddhists were touched with various emotions regarding great love and sacrifice of parents while listening Ms. Phuong Loan delivered the speech of meaning of pinning the rose on the shirt. To show the gratitude, the whole bodhimandala kept a minute of silent to remember Buddha’s merit; patriarch’s education; parents’ nurture; and the merit of country, the people and all of the living things. After that, hundreds of red, pink, white and yellow roses were pinned on the shirts of hundreds of filial people to sincerely remind the great sacrifice of two great persons: Mother and Father.
Ullumbana Ceremony is also the Pravarana, the end of restraint of the monks. Following the filial piety exemplary of Venerable Moggallana, on behalf of participants, teenage Buddhists wholeheartedly offered things to the witnessing monks with all respect.
In appreciation, Venerable Thich Chieu Tuc paid a compliment on the filial piety of Buddhists. He also advised to follow Venerable Moggallana’s exemplary. In addition, the Venerable reminded Buddhists about the ten kindness of parents taught by Buddha in “In return to parents’ kindness Sutra†so as for Buddhists to comprehend parents’ sacrifice and grace and some duty a child should do to express filial piety in return. In the end, the Venerable wished all of the Buddhists a Ullumbana season full of delight.
The ceremony ended in the ceremony of offering incense to Buddha and wished for Ullumbana season full of filial piety.
The ceremony was also contributed by various singers on several songs regarding parents’ love, such as: Elite singer Phuong Loan, Singer-Actor.Tuan Phuong, Singer-Actor Gia Lam, Singer Bao Son, singer Thanh Tung.
In the same ceremony, the Monks and Buddhist. Duong Tu Quyen from Australia and Feamous from Cambodia dearly gave 300 gifts, each of whom was 10kg of rice and a carton of instant noodles, to poor family.
