The wise people will not believe in the garbish rumor.
Update: 04/09/2015
Among the five precepts of Buddhism there is a rule of “no lying” that means people should not speak anything which hurt others’ feelings.
“No lying†is sorted into the important rule because it is one of the mistakes that people are easy to make and it has big effect on others’ happiness. In life, people hardly want to praise others sincerely and their speech contains no felicities or they praise someone to their face but criticize them behind their back. They normally praise and glorify others for their own benefit or they will spread the false rumors because of jealousy, enviousness of what others have to satisfy their anger. Once this vice becomes a habit, it’s difficult for people to leave off.
People in general are attracted by the rumors and sensational news. Means of communication also rely on this point to spread the shocking news such as “this singer falls in love with that man, that model has an illegitimate child with…†People easily pay attention to such news but after careful thought we will recognize that they are just idle talks in order to kill time of the idle ones. And although people know it’s just a rumor but they want to listen to, to criticize and contribute in spreading it. The popular case of spreading false rumor: “I just heard rumor that, but I’m not sure whether it’s right or wrong and you should not tell others…â€
The listener promises not to let anyone know but he/she does it in silently and also repeats the same thing that “I just heard…you should not let others know…†Then the false rumor has been spread!
Instead of spreading the vain things which can create the bad effect to others we should spread good deeds or examples to encourage and console them. This expresses the humanity between human. And before spreading the rumor we should try to put ourselves into the victim’s situation to think of it. Surely after doing it we will understand how much trouble and suffering the victim will get and we will not become a link of a spreading rumor chain any more.
In Buddhism we have many ways to better ourselves. One of them is accumulation of merit. Therefore, before criticizing, sneering or censuring others we should think over to make sure that whether the rumor will have any effect to ourselves or not, then we will not be rash in our speech any more. It means we already accumulate merit from speech. On the opposite side, we will get the bitter fruit by our actions one day if we are indiscriminate in our speech. Saying good words, nice words which bring happiness out for ourselves and others is what we should do.
