Following the model of Hoang Phap temple, many other temples also organize the summer retreat for the secondary school and high school students, from 12-22-year-olds.

This summer, on the occasion of Buddhist activities in the north, some temple also invited the Hoang Phap monks for help and preach Dharma. In Hung Yen city, the temple named Hoang Ba, managed by Ven. Thich Nu Dam Dao, opened the summer retreat from June 21st to June 25th, attracted over 400 students joining. This is the 6thSummer Retreat has been organized.

In the morning, having finished the enrolling procedure, the monks guided them on how to behave when living in the temple as put the palms together, bow down, worship… The monks giving Dharma talk in this course from Hoang Phap temple were Ven. Thich Dao Quang, Ven. Thich Tam Sy, Ven. Thich Tam Chanh and Ven. Thich Tam Dao.

In the afternoon, Ven. Thich Dao Quang addressed to all students the talk named “Who is the one you love most”. He pointed out no one but yourself you should love most. People normally think that that may be parent, brothers, or sisters…In fact, you should love yourself first. Without loving yourself there is no place for your relatives and others. Loving yourself is not to pamper, to spoil, or to indulge yourself and be selfish to others. Love yourself you have to abandon what take you to back-slide, what destroy your mind and body, what corrupt your morality, what closed your bright future… To love yourself you need a lot of effort and courage to give up many things. When you ready for firming stand, you have enough love, compassion for relatives and others in need.

Finished the dharma talk, they all chant the Ullambana Sutta for reminding the great kindness of parent, and the sutta is the admonishment to the young people, those who gradually neglect parent kindness and consider as parent’s duty, no need to remember or repay. Parent kindness is one of the four great kindnesses that all people need to remember for repaying.

The next day, June  22nd, Ven. Thich Tam Sy shared a talk on the title “Happiness, the Philosophy of Marriage”. This is not a new title but never old also. How to get a happy marriage is the target of all people, started with the youth. He emphasized happiness can found from nowhere but yourself. Learn how to correct oneself to be betterevery day is the best way to continue a happy marriage. To do these things everyone has to feed them by knowledge for a right view in everything. In the evening, Ven. Thich Nu Dam Mo, member of BuddhistAdministration Sangha of Hung Yen visited the temple and had a talk about the brief history of the Buddha and then a small test for Buddhist knowledge checking to all students. By taking the test, students gain more about the Buddha, the Indian culture, history, and geography…

On June 23rd, Ven. Thich Tam Chanh, a Hoang Phap monk, had a practical talk on the title “Teenagers, the Feeling of Inferiority”. Via the talk, he shows some bad feeling the young people normally have from the body dysmorphia to position, knowledge… to emphasize the most important thing people should develop: the beauty of the mind. We all appear in this world with a different look, it caused by karma from the past. In present, if we can’t change out birth, our look, try to change our mind, our thought by correcting from wrong to right, accumulating knowledge and cultivate our compassion for the benefit of others. Be confident in yourself, thecourage to chase your passion and develop your mind is the highest beauty we are toward reaching.

On June 24th, the fourth day of the retreat, a Dharma talk titled “Understanding and Loving” shared by Ven. Thich Tam Dao, the former vice abbot of Hoang Phap. A message he wants to send to all is “understanding to love”. The truth is a true love issue from understanding. Understanding here is the opened-heart to embrace and tolerate others, and therefore, “there is understanding, there is loving”. This is also the general message the temple wants to send to all students attending the course. In the evening, a small gratitude ceremony was taken place for recalling parent’s kindness.

The summer retreat in five days has been finished completely in the joy of all students.
