Repentance celebration on May 30th, Goat Year
Update: 15/07/2015
In the evening of Juy 15th, 2015 (May 30th, Goat Year), thousands of Buddhists from Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding provinces gathered in Hoang Phap Pagoda to attend the Repentance Celebration.
Before the opening was a Dharma talk given by the pagoda’s Monks. In this repentance, Ven. Thich Tam Luyen had a talk on the topic “Buddhism.â€
After one hour, the Ven. represented 5 basic characteristics of Buddhism:
1/ Humanism: Buddhism considers human beings an origin, a center for development, going ahead, and directing to the truth – the good – the beautiful.
2/ Equality: Buddhism has a concept that all of sentient beings, from human beings to small animals or insects, have the same extraordinary ability that is the ability to be a Buddha.
3/ Mercy: The mercy usually brings happiness to all of sentient beings. The mercy destroys all sufferings of all sentient beings.
4/ Wisdom: Buddhism takes wisdom as its goal (attaining wisdom is all Buddhists’ goal). Wisdom is the only mean to bring sentient beings to release and awareness.
5/ None-ego: everything and every phenomenon are created by the combination and reaction of causation; therefore, it is no doubt that there is no subject, unchanged unity in it.
Buddhism has a concept that every sentient being also has the same equality in tranquil, ability to become a Buddha. However, we have to steps on our own feet to attain awareness since no one can replace this or spread the utmost happiness to us. The Buddha taught: “Make endeavor by yourself to attain release and awareness. The Tathagata is just an instructor.â€
The issues represented by the Monk are the basic and essential issues in Buddhism, but they are necessary element to create a happy, peaceful life for yourselves and our society.
