One-Day-Retreat at Pho Minh Pagoda, Indiana - United States

The building of Pho Minh pagoda used to be an unattended Protestant Church in a long time before being sold to Bhikkhuni Thich Nhu Phuong to become a Pagoda. Although it is in the state of repair, with strong will of preaching Dharma for the benefits of human beings, Bhikkhuni invited Ven. Thich Chan Tinh and monks holding a One-Day-Retreat here.

In the morning session, Venerable Thich Chan Tinh guided the mass etiquette for Buddhists, shared his experience on how to sit and recite Amita Buddha’s name.

In the afternoon session, Venerable Thich Chan Tinh genuinely and sincerely had a talk sharing his sympathy to the situation of expatriate Vietnamese Buddhists living afar from country. Each one has his/her own circumstances that lead to be here in US. Nevertheless deep in the heart, everyone always keeps in mind their origins, respects ancestors and wholeheartedly desires having a place to together with brethrens practice and worship. Those are the reasons for the building of  this pagoda regardless Indiana is a state with very few Vietnamese residents. For the sake of Dharma preaching and the desire of serving sentient beings, Bhikkhuni Thich Nhu Phuong out of her compassion, irrespective of her old age and sickness, built this Pagoda as a place for Buddhists’ practicing. This is a very beneficial activity meeting the needs of Vietnamese expatriates.

The Venerable also had a Dharma talk of the faith and how to consolidate and promote mindfulness. Thereby, the Venerable reiterated the Avatamsaka Sutra teachings: "Trust is the mother of merits". In view of Buddhism, faith is an important and integral factor bringing many benefits to Buddhism learners. Nevertheless, Buddhist belief is based on rational foundation of the practicing Buddha's teaching instead of blind confidence or dogmatic view. Thus, in the Maha-Parinibbana-sutta, Buddha said: "Faith makes people listen to Dharma, Dharma listening brings people faith." Therefore, the Venerable encouraged Buddhists diligently strive to consolidate faith to be closer and closer to eternal liberation. After the Dharma talk, Buddhists recited Amita Buddha’s name and practice meditation.

On this occasion, the Venerable Thich Chan Tinh presented DVD film "Looking for the Enlightenment" and the book "Remaining in happiness" as Dharma gift to the participants.
