Floral Candle-Light Ceremony on Amitabha Day in Phuoc Thien Pagoda

As usual, on the 10th day of November lunar calendar every year, Phuoc Thien pagoda organizes the Floral Candle-Light Ceremony for the Day of Amitabha, the Buddha of immeasurable generosity and compassion to sentient beings. That was the reason for the large crowd of Buddhist devotees attending the event.

Exactly at 18:30, the ceremony officially started with prajnaa drumming ritual to welcome the clergy guests of honour and participants.

Opening the ceremony, nun Thich Nu Chuc Hai, the abbess of Phuoc Thien pagoda, head of the ceremony organizing committee, declared the opening speech emphasizing the ultimate merits being the human, being Buddhists, knowing Dharma, being introduced the Pure Land of Amita Buddha and how to get there. Therefore, Amitabha Day is an important day for Pure-Land Practitioners. On behalf of the organizing committee, the nun abbess expressed her deep gratitude to the Buddhist Committee of Binh Chanh district, as well as the Venerable Abbot and monks of Hoang Phap Pagoda for their support to the solemn and monumental ceremony of Amitabha Day.

Next, the mass sincerely headed to Amitabha statue for the Triratna incense offering. The program continued with the light sharing ritual. This is the most important part of the celebration. The candle light was shared and spread out among the crowd by Buddhist devotees as the symbol of Dharma preaching and Dharma wheel turning. This is also the symbol of preaching the light of wisdom, compassion, loving kindness and understanding so that practitioners could fully experience the unlimited compassion from Buddha and diligently cultivate on their Path to Enlightenment.

The voice of chanting, recitation and the echo of Amita Buddha’s 48 great vows even made the ceremony more solemn and dignified.

The meaning of the ceremony was strengthened with the Dharma talk from the Most Venerable Thich Thien Minh, Standing Committee Deputy Head of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam in Binh Chanh district. With simple but profound stories, he helped Buddhist devotees understand more about Amitabha Buddha as well as the features and benefits from Amitabha recitation. The ashram wholeheartedly listened and followed the teachings of the Most Venerable.

The beautiful melody of the song “Toa Sang Dem Di Da” in the marvelous sparkling candle light has ended the ceremony in the ease and joys of all.
