On the 3rd day in the 103rd Retreat of Aug. 27th, 2024 Senior Thich Phuoc Tien, – General Secretary of Viet Nam Buddhist Research Institute, Abbot of Tuong Van Monastery (HCMC), and Nhi My Pagoda (Vinh Long) preached a Dharma talk named Silence as the Dharma in Wheel-Dharma Building's Main Hall.
As a great wise man when he was alive, the Buddha kept silent many times when questioned because he realized that it was not beneficial for his practice and liberation. Likewise, there are things that we do not need to debate, and do not speak arbitrarily without careful consideration, because it is not beneficial, even leading to disaster for ourselves.
The Buddha taught the Bhikkhus to be silent as the Dharma, and speak as the Dharma. The Dharma has a very profound meaning, is the truth, is appropriate to the circumstances and individuals. A wise person is someone who knows how to use the Dharma at the right time, in the right place.
Silence as the Dharma has three main meanings:
+ In the Ariyapariyesanà Sutta, the Buddha taught to turn inward so that the mind can be calm and peaceful, not to follow delusions and thoughts make the mind waver.
+ Silence means not answering useless questions that have no end and are unnecessary.
+ The ultimate truth is without words, without speaking.
The Venerable hopes the mass needs to redefine the purpose of studying and practicing, self-assess the level of foundation to choose the appropriate practice and practice diligently. Those who study the Dharma, understand the truth and attain the Dharma do not criticize the Dharma and the teachings.
