Buddhist Beginners’ Offering to Their Master

Update: 05/04/2011

\r\n\r\n
This morning flowers and leaves are seen at every street\r\ncorner,
\r\n\r\n
While yellow sunlight is spreading on natural sights and the\r\nwind is blowing, both are performing gently;
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, lilies smell sweet and roses show their arrogance
\r\n\r\n
All aiming at offering to my master was on the occasion of\r\nschoolmaster’s traditional day.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
But there are teachers who lead their lives silently and\r\nexpose themselves to winds and rains to perform their duty
\r\n\r\n
As a boatman carrying his countless numbers of students to\r\nand from river banks
\r\n\r\n
Those teachers who just think of their dedicated religion\r\nand live for the benefits of human life
\r\n\r\n
Even though they themselves live through difficult times\r\nwithout any hope for a form of repayment.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
My master always leads a frugal life with two daily meals\r\nwith nothing but rice and pickled cucumbers and aubergines,
\r\n\r\n
And a worn brown cassock
\r\n\r\n
Together with a string of beads for Buddhist praying\r\nAmitabha Buddha
\r\n\r\n
With a view to lessen living beings’ miseries

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
That is my master, Senior Venerable Thich Chan Tinh, do you\r\nknow Him?
\r\n\r\n
His merciful heart is like an immense ocean,
\r\n\r\n
He, a grace master, an educator, a father,
\r\n\r\n
Who preaches and teaches us the Dharma, affection as well as\r\nreal-life experience?
 \r\n\r\n
He has taught us that not a single human being can avoid\r\nfrom vicissitudes  -   joys and miseries,
\r\n\r\n
Praises and blames, love, hatred are just illusories.
\r\n\r\n
Therefore, don’t blame anything or anyone;
\r\n\r\n
Instead, accept the truth and try your best to improve\r\nyourselves and to make a vow to acquire your perfect or Bodhi heart.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
I would like to express many thanks to you for having taught\r\nme wonderful things
\r\n\r\n
And led me to sunlight from the dark.
\r\n\r\n
You have saved me, an orphan,
\r\n\r\n
And led me to peace and contentment.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
As this worldly life is full of pieces of slander and\r\nhatred,
\r\n\r\n
Human beings hurriedly look for wealth and fame.
\r\n\r\n
Many times I have collapsed from overwork right in the\r\nmiddle of the human market.
\r\n\r\n
It is in suffering misery that I have really understood the\r\nburden you have sent me.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Dear Sir, I understand that giving means receiving and\r\nletting go means rescuing for enlightenment
\r\n\r\n
Happiness or misery is being neither inside nor outside\r\nsituations; instead, it depends on our karma
\r\n\r\n
Money and fame are just the same as building castles in the\r\nair.
\r\n\r\n
It would be better to firmly pray Sakyamuni / Amitabha\r\nBuddha for salvation

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
I still remember the good seed you have germinated in me.
\r\n\r\n
Likewise, Sutras, discourse, Vinaya (monastic rules) you\r\nhave taught me: those are like rain poured into me.
\r\n\r\n
Due to my stupidness those seeds have just begun germinated.
\r\n\r\n
With my own heart, I’d like to respectfully present you my\r\npresent immature seedlings
 \r\n\r\n
Represented in some of these awkward and innocent lines of\r\nmine
\r\n\r\n
To the noble one who will always propagate of the true\r\nDharma aiming at helping the mass known as living beings.
\r\n\r\n
As the waves of Vung Tau waters will crash into its shore\r\nforever,
\r\n\r\n
I myself will engrave your sublime words into my heart\r\nfor life and wish that you, the founder, be always wealthy.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

(I respectfully offer these lines of poem to my master Chan\r\nTinh. The composer: Chon Hien Bao, in Vung Tau).

\r\n\r\n

Translated into English by Mr. Hoang Huan, layman.
