Dongguk university places in Jung-gu, Seoul, in the north, at the foot of Namsan mountain. The school was named Myeongjin (명진학교) at the beginning. It was forced closing under the Japanese domination from 1922 to 1928 after the active movement March 1st, and the second times in 1944 caused by some chaotic events at the end of the world war II. This is one of the western-quality educational facilities for BA program, admitted by the Korean government in 1953.

Founded in 1906 by the trending union for Buddhist church from all over the world of the Jogye Order in North Korea, Dongguk is one of the Buddhist university has a close relationship to other countries. However, the school still welcomes all students and lecturers from other religions, by which, the quality of teaching and learning has been increased. They provide different cultures and experiences to education mission in general. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate students have a chance to interact with the latest theories and apply to practice in different faculties. Although Dongguk is always in the top universities of Korean but students still play the most important role in preserving its development.

In the evening, Ven. Thich Chan Tinh gave a talk in Nonsan, middle of Korea. This is the very countryside so people mostly have not many conditions in learning Buddhism, Venerable, therefore, expressed only the simple and basic dharma through three things: it’s hard to be born as human being, it’s hard to be born as a human with fully organs, and being a human, it’s hard to see, to know and to learn Buddhism.

In fact, the sutta had mentioned that to be born as a human being is harder than a blind turtle in the ocean has only one chance to find an empty tree floating on the surface for every hundred years. Why it’s so hard? Because being a man in the next existence one needs to keep a virtuous life and accumulate more good things but people in the human realm just try to fight each other, try to take what is good for themselves, grasp it and nourish only bad thing from the body, speech, and mind. Because we have no wisdom to see the living beings in the six realms so we don’t know that the human being is very humble if compare to other beings. That’s why the Buddha said it’s really hard to be born as human being.

Then, if really comprehending what the Buddha taught we need to respect our physical existence because it provides a means for taking the Buddha’s words to practice. We should learn how to overcome adversity, even in the worst circumstances to continue. There is no any realm better than human for Dharma practice. In addition, Venerable emphasized how much important in learning and applying the Buddha’s words effectively, it’s really not easy, not simple at all. We need to be patient in different conditions and put the most effort to practice day by day. It’s a long process to be successful.

To finish the talk, Venerable sent some monastic books as a dharma gift, written by himself as How to practice at home, A peaceful mind in worldly life, and A gift for New Year 2018.
